MFG Upgrade Guide

Our goal at MFG is to stage every race so that everyone has someone to compete with.

MFG works on a self-seeding model–you choose your category! Yeah! Choosing the right category is important so that you have the right competition and so do those around you. These guidelines are meant to provide you help in selecting a category and to help recognize when it’s time to move up or to move down.

The guidelines below are self-enforced and community-enforced. That means we will not be monitoring results and calling folks out. Rather, it’s up to you to know this policy and follow it. And if you feel someone is grossly in need of an upgrade and they are ignoring this policy, please let us know. We’ll either discreetly suggest to them to upgrade or call them out on the start line, to publicly shame them. We’re not sure yet. 😉

With all that, here are the MFG upgrade guidelines:

  • Women: If you were on the season podium in your category, upgrade to the next highest category for the following season.
  • Men: If you were top 15-20% of the season standings in a category, upgrade to the next highest category for the following season.
  • If you are new to racing, and you are winning by a huge margin, then CAT UP! It may take a few weeks to figure out where you fit but, your first category choice may not be the right one.
  • If you are consistently at the bottom of your category finishing in the bottom 10%, consider downgrading, but you are welcome to stay in the category.
  • Beginners… We love the beginner category! But this is really meant to be for your first 3-4 races. Move to Cat 4 as soon as you have a sense for what races are like. We do not offer season podium awards for the beginner category.
